Free live working session for HR professionals in Africa

The five contract and termination mistakes that end up in front of a tribunal

Employment law across Africa moved this year. In forty-five minutes we walk through the five situations that most often turn into a claim, and what a well-run HR team does differently. Bring the case that is on your desk right now.

What we will work through

Each mistake comes with a real (anonymised) scenario, the provision it breaches, and the step that would have avoided the claim.

1

The fixed-term contract that quietly became permanent

Rolling renewals without a justifiable reason, and the moment the law starts treating the employee as permanent, with all the protection that brings.

2

Probation that ended without a decision

The employee simply carried on. Why silence at the end of probation is one of the most expensive habits in HR, and the one-page process that fixes it.

3

Misconduct dismissal with the right reason and the wrong procedure

A fair reason is not enough. What a hearing, notice and the right to respond actually need to look like before a dismissal will hold up.

4

Restructuring announced before consultation

Retrenchment and redundancy have a sequence. Skip a step and the whole exercise can be unwound, with back pay attached.

5

The clause copied from another country's template

Restraints of trade, notice periods, deductions and termination clauses that were valid where they were drafted and are unenforceable where they are used.

Q

Open Q&A on your own situation

The last ten minutes are yours. Ask about a contract, a dismissal or a reform in your country and we will work through it live.

Built for the person the manager asks first

When someone needs to be let go, a contract needs fixing or a union letter arrives, HR gets the question before the lawyer does. This session is for the people who have to answer it.

I came in wanting to stop second-guessing myself every time a manager asked about a termination. The modules on contracts and dismissal gave me the structure I was missing.

Questions people ask before registering

Is the session really free?

Yes. There is no fee and no obligation. We spend five minutes near the end describing the CIELA Africa Track and what comes with it, for those who want to know more, and that is the extent of it.

What if I cannot attend live?

Register anyway. Everyone who registers receives the recording and the checklist within a day of the session.

Do I need a legal background?

No. The session is designed for HR professionals. If you are a lawyer or in-house counsel you are welcome too; the Q&A tends to be useful for both.

Which countries will you cover?

The examples come from South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Morocco, and the principles apply across most of the continent. Tell us your country when you register and we will try to include it in the Q&A.

How do I join on the day?

The session runs on GoToWebinar. Your personal joining link arrives by email as soon as you register, with a reminder an hour before we start. You can join from a browser, no download needed.
